Lance Armstrong

I've watched the first part of a documentary about this guy on IPlayer.
I'm not a cycling fan so when I heard the news of his doping scandal I just assumed that he was a big fat cheat. Which he was and he admits.
But it becomes apparent that nearly everyone was and if he were to make a living (he'd already won a World Title without doping at 21), he'd have to jump on the bandwagon - which he did.
Yes, he's arrogant and a bit of a bully to his team mates but you need that single mindedness to dominate in a sport.

I've watched part 2 now.
My opinion hasn't changed. He had no choice other than to dope or his career would be over at 23.
Yes, he lied and lied but that's how some people react when under attack, like Oscar Pretorius for example.
His charity has raised hundreds of millions of dollars and changed the way cancer was treated. 10,000 + babies have been born to women who have had cancer by funding the freezing of their eggs.
And many ex-teammates are still his friend today so his 'bullying' couldn't have been that severe.
I'd have no problem buying the bloke a beer if I met him.

I saw a documentary about in play betting on tennis.
It sounded like a pretty decent "job" to have, travelling around the world, watching female tennis players, and working for a couple of hours each day.
I suppose covid has fucked that all up for them now.

Vexed - you're spot on, fella.
Tennis is ridiculously corrupt compared to most sports.
But because it's a nicey-nicey middle-class thing played and run by people called Arabella and Jacintha (and that's just the men) then very little will get done about it quickly.

You also get the betting oddballs that travel to fucking obscure tennis tournaments and stay on the phone remote controlling another bellend who is furiously chucking in bets on an almost per point basis. They target particular games that have an umpire they like because they're slow punching in the scores and it gives them time to get their bet in place. It's all quite interesting stuff.
Tennis is not only a shit sport for cunts but it's totally bent in every way possible.

I reckon we should just give up.on testing. It's not like these cunts are getting on a motorbike. Let them take what they want. Far too much subterfuge anyway. At least itll be a level playing field for once.

Diop gave an almighty cheer when Lookman fucked up that penalty.
You could hear it on broadcast.

One lower ranking (satellite) player told me, quite brazenly, that he could triple his annual earnings by spot-fixing. And he was one of the better satellite players.

Re: Lance Armstrong

By far the bigger problem in tennis is match-fixing or spot-fixing.
I had a whistle-blower approach me a few years ago, from a European state. He was good friends with a former world top-15 player and he (through this player, who was fecked off with what was going on) offered to help me and a team of hacks look into the whole culture of it all.
So I approached various boradcasters and papers with it - we were pretty much good to go (team in place, sources in place, inside docs etc). Not a single publication wanted to touch it/fund it or push it along. Too many vested interests. It needed resourcing, but the info was there.
A little while later, Buzzfeed ran a decent investigation into a few of the allegations - but they also left a lot of hard-hitting material out.
Match-fixing and spot-fixing are rife in tennis. Particularly among the lower ranking players when they reach a high-level tournament. They know they are going out early, so they throw sets, games, serves, double-faults etc to make up their cash. The number of suspicious bets on tennis has soared in recent years - and they are only those bets that get flagged.
But it's the betting syndicates etc behind it all who need investigating.

Re: Lance Armstrong

The Secret Race co written by Tyler Hamilton is a proper eye opener on the doping culture back then.
Retrospective testing is the way forward with all this stuff. Most of eastern europe is getting popped for doping now, with the desperate aussies next. It's the best deterrent.
Whatever you say about the cunt Armstrong, Cycling is now one of the cleaner sports out there, partly because of the scandal caused by the prick and partly because all the shithouses of that era like Basso, Menchov, Vinikourov, Hincapie etc are retired or close to retirement. If I was WADA I'd be focussing my attention on fucking swimming and Tennis which are absolutely riddled.
